Mother Told to Abort her "Disabled" Baby Gives Birth to Healthy Son

At 20 weeks pregnant Gemma Rodgers went along to have a routine scan at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary hospital. Doctors told Miss Rodgers after the scan that the baby would have spina bifida which meant he would not be able to walk and would have no quality of life. It was also recommended to her to abort the child.

Miss Rodgers thankfully decided against this course of action and Ciaran Rodgers was born in May 2012 with none of the diagnoses the doctors informed her of. Ciaran is now a healthy 3 year old boy and doing very well.

The problem with diagnoses of babies in the womb is the possibility that doctors may get it wrong. And then to advise women to abort the baby when the diagnosis is not 100% certain is as we have seen quite dangerous. How many babies lives have been cut short because of a misdiagnosis? Unfortunately we may never know the answer to this question but the tragedy is there for all to see.

Also the fact that babies who are diagnosed with certain perceived "disabilities" and a modern society's reaction to this to abort the baby is quite a sad place we find ourselves in. Why do we feel the need as a society to encourage mothers to commit the most unnatural act in all of nature, to kill one's offspring. A mother's love is normally unconditional. This is the new warped logic of many in the western world today.

Babies Learn to Recognise Words in the Womb

As a baby grows inside the mother's womb recent research shows that the baby has the ability to hear sounds from the outside world. A 1988 study found that new-born babies recognise the sound of the theme tune of their mother's favourite soap opera. Cognitive neuroscientist of the University of Helsinki says that "if you put your hand over your mouth and speak, that is very similar to the situation the foetus is in." He went on to say that the growing baby "can hear the rhythm of speech, rhythm of music and so on."

This study again makes us confront the opinion that the child in the womb is just a blob of cells. On the contrary as science continues to show us, this new conceived organism is a living human being who has inalienable human dignity simply by the fact of being human. There is no stage of life that a human being is not a human being. To deny this fact is almost akin to denying science.

Just One Abortion or Miscarriage "Increases the Risk of Complications in Future Pregnancies"

A new study has shown that women who have experienced a single interruption in the first trimester of pregnancy are 30% more likely to face complications in future, than women who have not experienced a pregnancy loss. An interruption to pregnancy includes a single abortion or spontaneous miscarriage.

Researchers at Tel Aviv University, led by Dr Liran Hiersch, analysed 15,000 deliveries at Rabin Medical Center in Israel over the last five years.

I think it is important that this information is put out there as so many who advocate for abortion fail to take into account all the information surrounding such procedures. Abortion is not a simple fix for any woman. There are physical and mental issues that all need to be taken into account and not simply ignored when discussing abortion. To do otherwise is a great disservice to women.

Government Must Step In and Support Those Dealing with Homeless Crisis, says PLC

Yesterday's sad but not unexpected news reports that show that 6 pregnant women are sleeping rough in Dublin highlights the serious lack of adequate services for some of our most vulnerable members of society. The deafening silence of those who so vociferously demand abortion as a human right for women in crisis pregnancies is all the more galling when these women are being left to suffer so inhumanely right under our very noses. Are these women not going through crisis pregnancies also?

"She's Not a Criminal"

Amnesty Ireland's "She's not a criminal" campaign is so far detached from the reality of the situation in this country that to use this as a campaign slogan is disingenuous at best. Not one person in the Irish Republic has been prosecuted under this law. This campaign gives the impression that Irish women who abort their baby here run the risk of going to jail. This is a highly unlikely scenario to say the least.

Also in discussing the rights of women how does one forget about the future women of this country in the same breath. The unborn child will grow up and become men and women of this country. Are these babies criminals? The baby in the womb is not a criminal either lest we forget our most vulnerable. Can Amnesty really maintain that they are a defender of human rights when over 40 million babies are killed in the womb each year and there is no mention of their rights? And what of the incredibly poor abortion practices that go on where babies have survived a botched abortion and are left to die an excruciating death? Where are their rights? And where is Amnesty hiding on these issues?

Amnesty Must Clarify Its Comments Regarding Abortion and Disabled People, says PLC

Executive Director of Amnesty Ireland Colm O'Gorman has gone on record to say that legislation must be introduced for babies in the womb diagnosed with "severe or fatal foetal impairment". This phrase which is not a medical diagnosis is so open to interpretation that it is extremely important that Mr O'Gorman and Amnesty clarify exactly which diagnoses they are referring to. In the UK a huge proportion of babies diagnosed with Down Syndrome are aborted every year.

Do we really want Ireland to follow suit and effectively create an unequal society between those perceived as "healthy" and those perceived as "impaired?"

Amnesty Ignores Horrific Human Rights Abuses of the Abortion Industry - PLC

Amnesty has called for the repeal of the 8th Amendment in Ireland in recent days. The push to repeal the 8th Amendment has been used as a tool to push the abortion agenda in Ireland in recent times. I think many of us need to take a step back and have a look at what the 8th Amendment actually says and what it means in practice.

The Eight Amendment of the Constitution Act 1983 which was introduced after a referendum inserted a new sub-section after section 3 of Article 40. The resulting Article 40.3.3 reads:

The State acknowledges the right to life of the unborn, with due care to the equal right to life of the mother, guarantees in its laws to respect, and as far as practicable, by its laws to defend and vindicate that right.

Now there is a misconception that the right to life of the unborn can impinge on the right to life of the mother. Nothing could be further from the truth. On the extremely rare occasions when there is a threat to the life of the mother during pregnancy, medical practitioners in this country can and will do all in their power to save both the lives of the mother and the unborn child. On very rare occasions the necessary medical steps needed to save the life of the mother may inadvertently cause some damage or in extreme cases cause the unborn baby to perish. This is never equivalent to abortion. Abortion is never a necessary treatment to protect the life of the mother during pregnancy.

Ireland is one of the safest places in the world for a mother to have a baby. Medical intervention may be needed during difficult pregnancies but abortion is never a medical solution to any difficulties the mother may have. For any person, organisation or other to say otherwise is simply not speaking with all the medical facts at their disposal.

Also for Amnesty to push for abortion here and to ignore the practices in countries like Britain and Canada where babies are being left to die after botched abortions makes you wonder what kind of an organisation has Amnesty become. Human Rights are above politics so for Amnesty to turn a blind eye to certain human rights injustices beggars belief.

Amnesty Ireland Has Abondoned Founding Principles and Is Now a De Facto Abortion Lobby Group, says PLC

Amnesty by calling on the repeal of the 8th Amendment has shown itself to be an abortion advocate as to deny the right to life of the unborn child is the most basic and pertinent right of all members of the human family.

Amnesty by taking this stand is effectively abandoning a large group of human beings which the organisation was set up initially to defend.

Amnesty's stated objective is:

"to conduct research and generate action to prevent and end grave abuses of human rights and to demand justice for those whose rights have been violated."

Is taking away the constitutional right to life of the unborn not a grave abuse of an unborn child's human rights? Has Amnesty really conducted its research on this issue? Where is the justice for the unborn child?

The apple it would appear has fallen very far from the tree.

Lucinda Creighton Re-affirms Her Commitment to both Mothers and Babies

Renua party leader Lucinda Creighton has re-affirmed her belief in protecting the life of both the mother and baby during pregnancy. Her replacement on the Fine Gael party ticket for Dublin Bay South Kate O'Connell spoke out yesterday about her traumatic experience when carrying her son Pierce. Pierce was given a 10% chance of survival when birth defects were discovered during pregnancy.

Kate O'Connell who is firmly pro-choice said that she felt let down by the system as she would have had to have travelled to the UK in order to obtain an abortion. Miss Creighton who had her own difficulties during her pregnancy praised the staff at The National Maternity Hospital on Holles Street for saving her daughter, Gwendolyn.

The irony of Kate O'Connell's remarks are that her son is now alive. Mrs O'Connell talks about choice but fails to realise the huge risk she took on her own son's life when she chose to have a test to ascertain what kind of defects her baby would have. This test has a remarkably high chance of spontaneous miscarriage. Mrs O'Connell took the 1 in 5 chance that her baby would die. For any mother to take such a chance on the life of her baby seems astonishing. Would she not have been then responsible for the loss of her child? And just to know if she was ready for a so called defective infant.

How many women before these tests were available carried their child to term and gave birth to children who were less than what is perceived as "perfect" in this imperfect world?

Are these "disabled" children worth so much less? Do these children not laugh and cry like the rest of us? If you prick them do they not bleed?

When a society starts to consider certain sets of people as less human than others then where are we as a society? Is a truly fair, just and compassionate society not one which tries its utmost to care for and cherish the littlest of its children? We are on a very dangerous road indeed.
