Mother Told to Abort her "Disabled" Baby Gives Birth to Healthy Son

At 20 weeks pregnant Gemma Rodgers went along to have a routine scan at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary hospital. Doctors told Miss Rodgers after the scan that the baby would have spina bifida which meant he would not be able to walk and would have no quality of life. It was also recommended to her to abort the child.

Miss Rodgers thankfully decided against this course of action and Ciaran Rodgers was born in May 2012 with none of the diagnoses the doctors informed her of. Ciaran is now a healthy 3 year old boy and doing very well.

The problem with diagnoses of babies in the womb is the possibility that doctors may get it wrong. And then to advise women to abort the baby when the diagnosis is not 100% certain is as we have seen quite dangerous. How many babies lives have been cut short because of a misdiagnosis? Unfortunately we may never know the answer to this question but the tragedy is there for all to see.

Also the fact that babies who are diagnosed with certain perceived "disabilities" and a modern society's reaction to this to abort the baby is quite a sad place we find ourselves in. Why do we feel the need as a society to encourage mothers to commit the most unnatural act in all of nature, to kill one's offspring. A mother's love is normally unconditional. This is the new warped logic of many in the western world today.

Babies Learn to Recognise Words in the Womb

As a baby grows inside the mother's womb recent research shows that the baby has the ability to hear sounds from the outside world. A 1988 study found that new-born babies recognise the sound of the theme tune of their mother's favourite soap opera. Cognitive neuroscientist of the University of Helsinki says that "if you put your hand over your mouth and speak, that is very similar to the situation the foetus is in." He went on to say that the growing baby "can hear the rhythm of speech, rhythm of music and so on."

This study again makes us confront the opinion that the child in the womb is just a blob of cells. On the contrary as science continues to show us, this new conceived organism is a living human being who has inalienable human dignity simply by the fact of being human. There is no stage of life that a human being is not a human being. To deny this fact is almost akin to denying science.

Just One Abortion or Miscarriage "Increases the Risk of Complications in Future Pregnancies"

A new study has shown that women who have experienced a single interruption in the first trimester of pregnancy are 30% more likely to face complications in future, than women who have not experienced a pregnancy loss. An interruption to pregnancy includes a single abortion or spontaneous miscarriage.

Researchers at Tel Aviv University, led by Dr Liran Hiersch, analysed 15,000 deliveries at Rabin Medical Center in Israel over the last five years.

I think it is important that this information is put out there as so many who advocate for abortion fail to take into account all the information surrounding such procedures. Abortion is not a simple fix for any woman. There are physical and mental issues that all need to be taken into account and not simply ignored when discussing abortion. To do otherwise is a great disservice to women.

Government Must Step In and Support Those Dealing with Homeless Crisis, says PLC

Yesterday's sad but not unexpected news reports that show that 6 pregnant women are sleeping rough in Dublin highlights the serious lack of adequate services for some of our most vulnerable members of society. The deafening silence of those who so vociferously demand abortion as a human right for women in crisis pregnancies is all the more galling when these women are being left to suffer so inhumanely right under our very noses. Are these women not going through crisis pregnancies also?

"She's Not a Criminal"

Amnesty Ireland's "She's not a criminal" campaign is so far detached from the reality of the situation in this country that to use this as a campaign slogan is disingenuous at best. Not one person in the Irish Republic has been prosecuted under this law. This campaign gives the impression that Irish women who abort their baby here run the risk of going to jail. This is a highly unlikely scenario to say the least.

Also in discussing the rights of women how does one forget about the future women of this country in the same breath. The unborn child will grow up and become men and women of this country. Are these babies criminals? The baby in the womb is not a criminal either lest we forget our most vulnerable. Can Amnesty really maintain that they are a defender of human rights when over 40 million babies are killed in the womb each year and there is no mention of their rights? And what of the incredibly poor abortion practices that go on where babies have survived a botched abortion and are left to die an excruciating death? Where are their rights? And where is Amnesty hiding on these issues?

Amnesty Must Clarify Its Comments Regarding Abortion and Disabled People, says PLC

Executive Director of Amnesty Ireland Colm O'Gorman has gone on record to say that legislation must be introduced for babies in the womb diagnosed with "severe or fatal foetal impairment". This phrase which is not a medical diagnosis is so open to interpretation that it is extremely important that Mr O'Gorman and Amnesty clarify exactly which diagnoses they are referring to. In the UK a huge proportion of babies diagnosed with Down Syndrome are aborted every year.

Do we really want Ireland to follow suit and effectively create an unequal society between those perceived as "healthy" and those perceived as "impaired?"

Amnesty Ignores Horrific Human Rights Abuses of the Abortion Industry - PLC

Amnesty has called for the repeal of the 8th Amendment in Ireland in recent days. The push to repeal the 8th Amendment has been used as a tool to push the abortion agenda in Ireland in recent times. I think many of us need to take a step back and have a look at what the 8th Amendment actually says and what it means in practice.

The Eight Amendment of the Constitution Act 1983 which was introduced after a referendum inserted a new sub-section after section 3 of Article 40. The resulting Article 40.3.3 reads:

The State acknowledges the right to life of the unborn, with due care to the equal right to life of the mother, guarantees in its laws to respect, and as far as practicable, by its laws to defend and vindicate that right.

Now there is a misconception that the right to life of the unborn can impinge on the right to life of the mother. Nothing could be further from the truth. On the extremely rare occasions when there is a threat to the life of the mother during pregnancy, medical practitioners in this country can and will do all in their power to save both the lives of the mother and the unborn child. On very rare occasions the necessary medical steps needed to save the life of the mother may inadvertently cause some damage or in extreme cases cause the unborn baby to perish. This is never equivalent to abortion. Abortion is never a necessary treatment to protect the life of the mother during pregnancy.

Ireland is one of the safest places in the world for a mother to have a baby. Medical intervention may be needed during difficult pregnancies but abortion is never a medical solution to any difficulties the mother may have. For any person, organisation or other to say otherwise is simply not speaking with all the medical facts at their disposal.

Also for Amnesty to push for abortion here and to ignore the practices in countries like Britain and Canada where babies are being left to die after botched abortions makes you wonder what kind of an organisation has Amnesty become. Human Rights are above politics so for Amnesty to turn a blind eye to certain human rights injustices beggars belief.

Amnesty Ireland Has Abondoned Founding Principles and Is Now a De Facto Abortion Lobby Group, says PLC

Amnesty by calling on the repeal of the 8th Amendment has shown itself to be an abortion advocate as to deny the right to life of the unborn child is the most basic and pertinent right of all members of the human family.

Amnesty by taking this stand is effectively abandoning a large group of human beings which the organisation was set up initially to defend.

Amnesty's stated objective is:

"to conduct research and generate action to prevent and end grave abuses of human rights and to demand justice for those whose rights have been violated."

Is taking away the constitutional right to life of the unborn not a grave abuse of an unborn child's human rights? Has Amnesty really conducted its research on this issue? Where is the justice for the unborn child?

The apple it would appear has fallen very far from the tree.

Lucinda Creighton Re-affirms Her Commitment to both Mothers and Babies

Renua party leader Lucinda Creighton has re-affirmed her belief in protecting the life of both the mother and baby during pregnancy. Her replacement on the Fine Gael party ticket for Dublin Bay South Kate O'Connell spoke out yesterday about her traumatic experience when carrying her son Pierce. Pierce was given a 10% chance of survival when birth defects were discovered during pregnancy.

Kate O'Connell who is firmly pro-choice said that she felt let down by the system as she would have had to have travelled to the UK in order to obtain an abortion. Miss Creighton who had her own difficulties during her pregnancy praised the staff at The National Maternity Hospital on Holles Street for saving her daughter, Gwendolyn.

The irony of Kate O'Connell's remarks are that her son is now alive. Mrs O'Connell talks about choice but fails to realise the huge risk she took on her own son's life when she chose to have a test to ascertain what kind of defects her baby would have. This test has a remarkably high chance of spontaneous miscarriage. Mrs O'Connell took the 1 in 5 chance that her baby would die. For any mother to take such a chance on the life of her baby seems astonishing. Would she not have been then responsible for the loss of her child? And just to know if she was ready for a so called defective infant.

How many women before these tests were available carried their child to term and gave birth to children who were less than what is perceived as "perfect" in this imperfect world?

Are these "disabled" children worth so much less? Do these children not laugh and cry like the rest of us? If you prick them do they not bleed?

When a society starts to consider certain sets of people as less human than others then where are we as a society? Is a truly fair, just and compassionate society not one which tries its utmost to care for and cherish the littlest of its children? We are on a very dangerous road indeed.

Pro Life Campaign Congratulates "Outstanding Achievements" of Team Ireland

Team Ireland has had one of the most successful World Games ever in taking home a quite remarkable 86 medals. That is 26 gold, 29 silver and 31 bronze. The sheer will and determination of our athletes has been an inspiration to us all and it truly shows the very best qualities of the human spirit.

It takes a huge effort to have made these achievements possible and it is only right to mention all those volunteers, family members, coaches, friends, sponsors etc. Without their dedication and sacrifices none of this would be possible.

Ireland has shown itself to be a world leader when it comes to the Special Olympics which shows Ireland in the best possible light in terms of the respect and inclusiveness shown to all members of our society. Congratulations to all of our athletes and a huge thank you to all those who have made this one of the most successful Special Olympics World Games ever.

"I Want a Lamborghini", Says Planned Parenthood Senior Staff Member While Haggling Over Baby Parts

In the second video released by the Centre for Medical Progress a senior executive of Planned Parenthood is shown haggling over the price of foetal body parts. In any walk of life outside the abortion issue a full scale criminal investigation would be initiated immediately. But the reaction of the Obama administration has been truly extraordinary. Spokespersons stating that the videos have been edited without having seen the videos and the President himself has hardly mentioned the incident.

Even if these videos proved to be complete fakes the first thing any right minded person in the position of president would surely be to order a full scale investigation to get to the truth of the matter. To use Planned Parenthood's viewpoint of the videos as your viewpoint is surely reprehensible and is almost an abdication of duty of the President and his administration. It is actually very difficult to comprehend such actions.

Also the Irish media has barely covered this story here either. Most Irish media outlets cover the US political scene but almost a blind eye has been given to this sordid issue. The Irish media has a responsibility to be an independent watchdog of the people. If our media is so biased on any given issue democracy in our country is merely an illusion. Are the media biased on other issues also? It really makes you wonder.

Government Must Step In and Support Homeless Pregnant Women, says PLC

It has been reported today that there are at least 17 pregnant women who are homeless on the streets of Dublin. This statistic is quite shocking in this day and age. Where is the uproar in the Dáil? Where is the call for women's rights? Where is the call for justice? Where are our politicians on this issue?

Here today we have certain parties who it seems every few months campaign to increase the rights to access abortion in Ireland yet they seem to give so much less attention to pregnant women sleeping rough on our capital's streets. It makes you wonder where some person's motivations lie and why one set of women are less worthy of their concern than others.

This is indeed a very sad state of affairs and the government must act very swiftly to put a halt to this social injustice and get these women into accommodation as soon as possible.

Pro Life Campaign Addresses UN Human Rights Committee in Geneva Today

The UN Human Rights Committee met in Geneva today and Deputy Chairperson of the Pro Life Campaign Cora Sherlock addressed the committee to speak in defence of Ireland's right as a sovereign nation to protect the rights of the unborn child.

In recent times the UN Human Rights Committee has been critical of Ireland's abortion laws specifically in terms of instances of rape, incest, fatal foetal abnormality and serious risks to the health of the mother. All of the above are extremely sensitive subject areas and one cannot but empathise to the plight that some women have had to go through. However once conception has taken place there are now 2 persons to be considered when we speak of human rights, the mother and the growing infant in the mother's womb.

To deny the humanity of the unborn child is to ignore the multitude of scientific research which clearly shows that once conception has taken place a new person has been formed. And all human beings regardless of age, gender, race etc. deserve the full protection of the law and their human rights must be considered also.

Responsibility for Failure to Implement Sepsis Guideline Rests Solely With Government, says PLC

In the 2 years that has lapsed since the tragic death of Savita Halappanavar it is only now that the new guidelines on the management of sepsis during pregnancy are being rolled out.

At the time of Savita's death those pushing for abortion were only too willing to jump on this tragic issue as a means to further their cause. To do so without waiting for the full enquiry to take place was political opportunism in all its shady glory. However for it to take 2 years for the new guidelines to finally be implemented is quite frankly utterly shameful. If another woman befell the same fate as Savita whose hands would her blood be on? The efforts put in to push for abortion without knowing all the facts were quite extraordinary but to see such a lack of effort to push through the new guidelines on sepsis management during pregnancy can only lead one to wonder where some people's true motivations lie.

"What Age Were The Babies?" asks PLC of Minister for Health, Leo Varadkar

The Minister for Health, Leo Varadkar revealed the figures in relation to procedures carried out under The Protection of Life during Pregnancy Act 2013. According to the Minister 26 abortions were carried out, 14 as a result from a risk of physical illness, 9 as a result of an emergency from physical illness and 3 from a risk of suicide.

These are the only details revealed of the first ever abortions to be carried out legally in the Republic of Ireland. The precise circumstances around these procedures have not been revealed. It is understandable that those concerned need to have their identities kept private but for future practice surely the details needs to be made public so as people can understand the circumstances where these procedures were deemed necessary to have taken place.

Were the procedures for those facing a risk of physical illness an intentional act to end the life of the unborn child or did the child merely perish as a result of medical procedures that were needed to protect the life of the mother whilst at the same time protecting as much as was practicable the life of the unborn child? It is imperative that the circumstances surrounding each circumstance are clarified as it is clearly in the public interest. To not give out the details may jeopardise women's and babies health in future as it is important to understand and learn from these procedures.

In relation to the intentional killing of the unborn child due to the risk of suicide this is an act not based whatsoever on any medical evidence. Abortion has never been a treatment for suicidal ideation. These 3 babies, before this legislation was so needlessly enacted, would almost certainly be still alive today. It is a sombre thought.

Amnesty's Close Links to "Women on Web" "Completely Undermines the Credibility of it's Abortion Report", says PLC

It has come to light in recent days that Amnesty's recent report on Ireland's abortion laws was compiled with assistance from the international abortion lobby group Women on Web. Almost without having to type another word it is blatantly obvious that any report on Ireland's abortion laws with the assistance of an abortion lobby group shows that the report is completely compromised.

This is very hard to fathom as any human rights organisation worth their salt needs to be able to show that they are completely impartial in all aspects of human rights issues that they make a stand on. Perceptions are key in this area. So not only should Amnesty be impartial in all of its practices it needs to ensure this is perceived by the general public and all stakeholders affected by the specific human rights issue being reported on at any given time.

Can Amnesty really have any credibility in discussing Ireland's abortion laws when there is a perception that the organisation has clearly been unduly influenced?

Abortion Drone Set for Ireland, No More than a Cheap Publicity Stunt - PLC

Women for Waves has indicated that it is going to target Ireland with a drone drop of illegal abortion pills. This shows extraordinary arrogance by Women for Waves as firstly to give away free pills in any walk of life is reprehensible at best and to encourage pregnant women that taking a few tablets as a quick fix for an unwanted pregnancy shows a total lack of understanding into the multi-layered effects of abortion on women's physical as well as mental well being.

How can an organisation who wants to be perceived as caring for women's rights in good conscience prescribe drugs to vulnerable pregnant women without even consulting a medical professional?

Where are these pills coming from? What exactly is in them? Are they safe?

Whatever Women for Waves arguments may be on the issue this course of action is truly negligent and to be frank quite dangerous.

Pro Life Campaign Criticises Plans to Cut Lone Parents' Allowance

The governments plans to alter the lone parents' allowance shows a government out of touch with what is happening on the ground. Lone parents provide an extremely important duty to our society taking care of and raising the future of our country.

Lone parents like all parents have an intrinsic role to play in society and their value can not be underestimated. For the government to try and push through this cut in the lone parents' allowance shows a huge disregard for those parents raising families on their own and will only cause much worry and heartache before these measures are finally introduced. Parents need to be supported as much as possible and although changes are necessary, this abrupt course of action would appear not be have been thought out with due care and diligence.

The Loss of Even One Baby's Life is an Immense Tragedy, says PLC

The PLC was commenting on figures released today by Health Minister Leo Varadkar showing that 26 abortions took place in 2014 under Ireland’s new abortion law, saying that the loss of even one child’s life from abortion is an immense human tragedy.
Commenting on the release of the figures, PLC Deputy Chairperson, Cora Sherlock said: “The Government and Minister Varadkar are fully aware that abortion is not a treatment for suicidal feelings. Yet they pressed ahead with legislation in 2013 providing for abortion on this ground, ignoring the expert evidence from two sets of Oireachtas hearings which showed that, far from being a medical treatment, abortion in the case of threatened suicide can have long term negative consequences for women. The loss of even one baby’s life from abortion is an immense tragedy. It is a very sad fact that the Government’s legislation in 2013 is directly responsible for the loss of life in the cases where three babies had their lives ended under the ‘threat of suicide’ ground for abortion."
“It is difficult to determine from the information made available today whether the deaths of the other 23 babies under the new Act resulted from induced abortion that directly targeted their lives or whether some or all of them resulted from necessary medical interventions in pregnancy to save the life of the mother where every reasonable effort was also made to save the life of the unborn child.”
Ms Sherlock continued:  “Under the new legislation the Government deliberately blurred the distinction between necessary medical interventions and induced abortion. But what is not at issue is that three babies under the new abortion Act had their lived ended without a shred of medical evidence to suggest abortion on this ground would safeguard the life of the mother. Pro-life groups never claimed that the new law would lead to abortion on demand overnight. We stand by the claim we made in 2013 that over time the new law, unless it is repealed, will normalize the practice of abortion in Ireland and undermine the dignity and inherent value of every human life.”

UN Commitee Deeply Hypocritical on Abortion

The Pro Life Campaign has described the recent UN hearings on abortion in Geneva as the latest chapter in an ongoing charade perpetrated by a Committee that is deeply hypocritical when it comes to abortion.
Deputy Chairperson of the Pro Life Campaign, Cora Sherlock commented on the Report which issued from the UN’s Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, saying:
“The Report highlights the importance of fighting discrimination, recommending that the State adopt “comprehensive anti-discrimination legislation” before then going on to advocate the further liberalisation of Ireland’s abortion laws. As the Committee members will be aware, abortion is the ultimate discrimination, targeting the right to life of the unborn, the most vulnerable in our society.
“In a similar vein, the Committee recommends a series of measures to benefit the disabled but it ignores the fact that in countries like the UK, abortion is available right up to birth where a baby is diagnosed with a disability. The Committee cannot continue to ignore these inconsistencies and expect its credibility to remain unchallenged.”
She continued:
“There is no “right to abortion” in international human rights law, a fact which has been conveniently ignored by the members of this Committee. There is, however, a “right to life” which is clearly set out in Article 3 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The UN should ensure that all of its Committee members adhere to the founding principles of this Declaration, and do not advocate measures which would impact negatively on the right to life of any human being, particularly the most vulnerable in society.”

Court Date Set after a Dublin Woman Dies after an Abortion

The Pro Life Campaign has criticised today the continuing refusal of the Government to comment on the latest scandal where a woman from Dublin bled to death following an abortion in a Marie Stopes clinic in London in 2012.
Commenting on the news that a court date of July 3rd has been fixed for the doctor and two nurses charged with manslaughter in the case, Cora Sherlock, Deputy Chairperson of the Pro Life Campaign, said:
“The continued silence from various members of the Government is very revealing about how the issue of abortion is dealt with in this country.  There has been no attempt whatsoever to address the fact that this unfortunate woman lost her life as a direct result of the treatment she received when undergoing an abortion. It seems that the loss of this woman’s life doesn’t merit attention simply because it doesn’t suit the agenda of abortion advocates.”
“Even though more of the facts of this case have now become available, there has still been no reaction from those members of the Government who are most vocal when it comes to attempts to further liberalise Ireland’s abortion laws.  Where is their outrage for the welfare of this woman, who fell prey to the falsehood of a “safe, legal abortion”? The Government ignoring this woman’s death is absolutely shameful.”

Deputy Mattie McGrath's Private Member's Bill Welcomed by PLC

The Pro Life Campaign has expressed its support for the latest effort by Independent TD Mattie McGrath, obliging medical professionals to desist from using the term ‘incompatible with life’ when referring to unborn babies with potentially life-limiting conditions.
Speaking in the Dáil yesterday during the introduction of his Private Members’ Bill on the issue (Disability Amendment Bill 2015), Mr McGrath said: “Like many phrases that may once have been prevalent in our society, for example terms like illegitimate or retard, the phrase 'incompatible with life' must be eliminated from our public discourse”.
Commenting on Deputy McGrath’s Bill, Cora Sherlock, Deputy Chairperson of the Pro Life Campaign said: “There is a responsibility on everyone who contributes to the abortion debate to behave in a way that doesn’t cause offence or hurt to families or individuals who may be feeling particularly vulnerable. In recent debates, some politicians have used obscene and highly offensive language to describe unborn babies with life-limiting conditions. There is nothing anyone can do about that other than appeal to these politicians to be more mindful of the sensitivities involved and how much hurt and anguish their ill-considered comments cause families of babies with terminal illnesses.”

Fundamental Flaws in Legislation Demonstrated in Leinster Hospital Abortion Case

The Pro Life Campaign has said today that the case of an abortion carried out in a Leinster hospital which has reportedly raised staff concerns about the certification process by the health professionals involved is not surprising.
Commenting on the case, in which an abortion was carried out under the terms of the 2013 legislation last October, Cora Sherlock, the Deputy Chairperson of the Pro Life Campaign said:
“The 2013 law permits abortion up until birth on a threat of suicide without any medical evidence to back it up.  The law simply requires two psychiatrists to sign off to pave the way for an unborn child’s life to be ended.”
“When the abortion law was being debated the Pro Life Campaign and others predicted that it was dangerously open to abuse and the case reported today appears to substantiate those concerns.”
Responding to the fact that the HSE does not intend to investigate if there has been any breach of procedure in this particular case she said:
“While we cannot comment on individual cases, it goes without saying that every situation where an unborn child’s life is taken, whether or not within the confines of the unjust abortion law of 2013, should be thoroughly investigated.”
“The idea of the HSE deciding not to investigate when legitimate concerns have been raised by its own staff about the ceritification procedure is disturbing and simply not acceptable. An independent investigation into this tragedy must take place without delay”, Cora Sherlock concluded.

"Where is the Political Outrage over Death of Woman from Ireland after Abortion in Marie Stopes Clinic?"

Deputy Chairperson of the Pro Life Campaign asks "where is the plitical outrage over the death of a woman from Ireland after she had an abortion in a Marie Stopes Clinic in London?"  as the silence of Government politicians over latest case highlights the colossal double standard in the abortion debate.

The Pro Life Campaign has accused members of the Government of “selective outrage” on the issue of abortion. It follows news that a doctor and two nurses in England have been charged with manslaughter after a woman from Ireland bled to death in the back of a London taxi within hours of undergoing an abortion at a Marie Stopes clinic in Ealing, London.

Commenting on the tragic case,  Ms Sherlock said: “It’s very revealing the way members of the Government have fallen silent over this latest Marie Stopes scandal. It lays bare the colossal double standards at the heart of the abortion debate in Ireland.
“The tragic death of Savita Halappanavar was misused, massively and continuously by certain politicians and journalists to get abortion legislation over the line in 2013. There was little or no regard at the time for the facts of that particular case which showed the real cause of the tragedy in Galway was mismanaged sepsis, not the non-availability of abortion in Ireland at the time.

"True Equality Means Accepting All Members Of Society, Born And Unborn"

The Pro Life Campaign has strongly criticised the attempts by abortion advocates to push for a repeal of the 8th Amendment in the aftermath of the recent marriage referendum in Ireland.
Deputy Chairperson Cora Sherlock commented:
“It is deeply hypocritical of politicians to celebrate equality and in the next breath to claim that this translates to a mandate to hold a referendum to repeal the 8th Amendment.”
“The 8th Amendment guarantees the equality of the unborn, who are a distinct group of human beings in Irish society.  Any attempt to remove it would lead to a less inclusive, less fair society.  This is not what the Irish people want.”
“It is extremely disturbing that some politicians are trying to exploit the experiences of families of babies with life-limiting conditions in order to try and promote a referendum on abortion.  There has been no sincere effort to improve perinatal palliative care facilities for these families, despite the fact that the Irish Medical Organisation and others have called for better supports for families in these difficult situations.”
She concluded:
“True equality means recognising and valuing all members of society, including babies with life-limiting conditions.  Advocating abortion in these circumstances is the worst form of discrimination and should be roundly condemned.”
